Introduction to Android App Decompilation and Analysis

Decompiling and reverse engineering Android applications (APKs) is a core step in mobile application security assessments. It allows engineers to inspect application logic, check for hardcoded secrets, and discover security flaws.

Key Tools

  • apktool: Decodes resource files (layout XML, images) and converts the binary classes.dex into readable Smali assembly code.
  • jadx / jadx-gui: Decompiles DEX/APK code directly back into clean, readable Java source files.

Basic Workflow

  1. Decompile with APKTool:
    1

    apktool d target.apk -o output_dir

  2. Examine resource assets: Check AndroidManifest.xml for exported components, backup configurations, or insecure permissions.
  3. Inspect source code: Open the APK in jadx-gui to audit custom encryption functions, inspect network transport policies (like SSL Pinning), and verify credential handling.
