Hardening AWS IAM Policies: The Principle of Least Privilege

Hardening AWS IAM Policies: The Principle of Least Privilege

In cloud infrastructure, identity is the new perimeter. AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) controls access to cloud resources, making policy hardening one of the most critical security tasks.

The Wildcard Hazard

Over-permissive wildcard policies allow entities to perform actions outside their responsibilities:

1
2
3
4
5
6
// VULNERABLE: Wildcard access to all S3 actions
{
  "Effect": "Allow",
  "Action": "s3:*",
  "Resource": "*"
}

Applying Least Privilege

Ensure roles have permissions only for the specific actions and resources required:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
// SECURE: Limited scope policy
{
  "Effect": "Allow",
  "Action": [
    "s3:GetObject",
    "s3:PutObject"
  ],
  "Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::my-production-bucket/*"
}

Regularly audit cloud configurations using tools like AWS Access Analyzer or Prowler to detect dangling or overly broad roles.
